OUTREACH PROJECT, ARROYO SECO, NEW MEXICO:

The Sustainable Research Center is implementing a prototype program focused on promoting and demonstrating practical, sustainable solutions on a neighborhood and residential scale. The concept of fostering self-sustaining individuals, neighborhoods and communities will be duplicated, multiplied and customized to fit specific locations across the United States and beyond.

The current project shown is the Northern New Mexico Community Outreach Center located in El Valle de Arroyo Seco, in North Santa Fe County, New Mexico. The existing building and site is being renovated to serve as a multi-purpose facility where the neighboring community can gather for the purpose of sharing information, sharing resources, learning and building community relationships. The renovated facility will include a kitchen, meeting space, stage, audiovisual and computer equipment. A community garden, greenhouses based on hydro, aquaponic technologies and recreational space is planned out of doors. The informational programs and outreach are geared toward incorporating all age groups.

This project is especially unique because it is being renovated in honor of one of the last surviving Navajo Code Talkers, Jack Jones who is 95 years old and lives in the North Santa Fe County area. Once complete, this building will house an apprenticeship and mentoring program named for Jack as a part of his legacy. This program will provide career guidance, development and employment opportunities for Navajo and other Northern New Mexico youth.
